What is it?
Hard Disk Scrubber is a utility that will securely delete files as well as overwrite
free space on your hard disk making the recovery of these files or any previously deleted files impossible.
When you first run this program you will see the main screen as shown below:
If you have previously deleted sensitive files using the normal Delete functions in Windows
or at the DOS prompt you will want to do a "Scrub Free Space" on the drive where these files once were.
This will overwrite all of the existing free space on a given drive rendering any previously deleted information un retrievable.
Each operation will now be described in detail.
Drive Select This will choose the drive for a Scrub Free Space Operation.
Fast/Normal/Slow This will choose the current operating speed for the scrubber. Fast Speed will demand more system resources.
Heavy Scrub When this box is checked the Hard Disk Scrubber will Scrub in 3 separate passes. The first pass will overwrite all of the data with
binary 0's. The second pass will overwrite all of the data with binary 1's, and the final pass will overwrite the data with random garbage. If this box
is left un-checked, the data will only be overwritten once with random garbage.
Prompt Each File This option only effects the "Secure Delete Files" operation. This will cause the scrubber to prompt you before overwriting
each file that is to be deleted.
Rename Files This will cause the scrubber to rename the deleted files before they are deleted.
Overwrite Only This will cause the scrubber to overwrite the original data in the tagged files, and to rename them if applicable, but the files will not be deleted.
Deleting Files:
To delete files with this utility you must first click on the small button with the picture of the file folder on it (just to the right of the "Files Tagged For Delete"
display). You will come to an open file dialog. Select the files that you want to delete. If you want to select multiple files you can do so by holding down the control key and toggling each file
in the list, or you can click the first file for delete and then hold down the shift key and then click the last file. When you do this ALL of the files in between the first and the last will be highlighted
for delete. Once you have chosen the files you want click on the OK button to add them to your delete list. The list will show the number of files that you have tagged for deletion. By clicking
on the number you can bring up a list of all of the files. To add more files to the list repeat the above steps for as many different drives and directories as needed. To clear the list bring up the list
of files by clicking on the number of files display on the main screen. Once this list is showing click on the "Clear List" button.
Once you have built your list of files to be deleted, click on the Secure Del Files button and the Scrubber will go to work. If you have checked the Heavy Scrub check box the scrubber
will make 3 passes on each file as described above.
Scrubbing Free Space:
To Scrub the free space on a drive, first click on the drive selector on the right hand side of the main screen and choose the drive letter to be scrubbed. Once you have done this that
drive's free space will show under the Disk Free indicator. Next decide if you want to use the Heavy Scrub mode or not. If you choose the Heavy Scrub Mode the scrubber will make 3 passes over the free space
as described above. If you leave the box un-checked, the scrubber will only make a single pass writing random data over the free space. Once the process is complete you will be prompted as to whether or not
you want to remove the temp files used to overwrite the free space. If you choose NO then you will have to remove them later on by hand. These files reside in a folder called SCRUBWRK and all of the
files called scrubber.* can be deleted.
Also during the scrub process Windows may prompt you with a screen like the one below:
Click on the "Cancel" button on this screen. Windows is only seeing that the space on the working drive is being used up. This space will be restored at the end of the process by answering YES to
the restore free space prompt. *
* If you are using the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, you will need to have Norton purge the files after you are finished scrubbing in order to recover all of your original free space.
You should temporarily DISABLE the protected recycle bin before doing a HEAVY SCRUB, otherwise the entire free space may not be overwritten completely 3 times.
